From sewing kimonos and managing theater productions to running a Hobart dishwasher, Betty Edwards Johnson ’74 benefited from many enriching experiences in her time at Northfield Mount Hermon. That’s why she has made it a priority to support the school now and in the future.

A scholarship and loan helped Betty attend NMH for four years. Once on campus, she embraced her experience, in the classroom, at her workjob assignments, and through the longtime friendships she forged with fellow math and computer devotees, theater enthusiasts, and Latin scholars.

Recently, Betty made a cash gift to fund an endowed scholarship, to give future NMH students the same opportunities she had. “I have been a loyal donor because I was a scholarship student,” she says. “I wanted to create a scholarship to carry that legacy on.”

Her new fund contributes to This Place, This Moment: The Campaign for Northfield Mount Hermon and advances NMH’s historic commitment to opening its doors to qualified students from all backgrounds. Her gift was eligible for a special 1:1 campaign scholarship match that doubles the size of Betty’s scholarship.

Betty also designated NMH as a beneficiary of her donor-advised fund and sponsored a challenge gift during NMH Gives for other members of the Class of ’74 as they prepared for their 50th reunion.

As she looks back on her years after NMH — from receiving a degree in physics from Harvey Mudd College to her 44-year career as a geophysicist at Chevron — Betty recognizes the vital role the school played in her life. She urges her fellow alums to consider what the school has meant to them and join her in making a planned gift.
